Picked up by Pace Gallery as its youngest artist in 2023, British painter Pam Evelyn’s swift ascension comes from her colorful, layered abstract canvases. Describing her lengthy, improvisational process as “a mist rising,” works reveal greater depth and influences the more one sits with them. Her first major U.S. institutional exhibition opened at Dallas Contemporary in November.

Octogenarian Marta Minujín pioneered pop art and performance art alongside her friend Andy Warhol. Both the Jewish Museum in New York and the Pinacoteca de São Paulo held retrospectives in 2023, while the Spaghetti Tower of Pisa, among her series of monumental, immersive installations, premiered in her native Buenos Aires in November. She’s represented by Kurimanzutto.

Whether painting abstract or figurative concepts or both, as in her recent show at Pilar Corrias, Sabine Moritz mines her memory and history for inspiration. Beginning with early works based on her childhood in East Germany, she has explored themes like aircraft, flowers and female forms emerging from bold brushstrokes in saturated colors. Galerie Max Hetzler also represents her.

Flora Yukhnovich’s fun, fantastical paintings explode with references to contemporary culture and a mashup of art movements from French Rococo to Abstract Expressionist. Her site-specific mural Four Seasons inspired by François Boucher’s works of the same name is on view at New York’s Frick Collection. Hauser & Wirth and Victoria Miro represent the British artist.

Brazilian painter Lucas Arruda tricks the eye to interpret imaginary landscapes as the real deal. The Musée d’Orsay recently exhibited his mnemonic reconstructions reminiscent of clouds to jungles in its first solo show by an artist from the Southern Hemisphere as well as its foray into contemporary projects. He is represented by David Zwirner and Mendes Wood.
